Enforceable Undertaking at Hansen Yuncken
At Hansen Yuncken, we take pride in our proactive approach toward safety and our impact on surrounding communities through meaningful actions. Our genuine care for our people extends into our subcontractor and project partner network based on inclusion and understanding.
In September 2019, a subcontracted truck driver, Christopher Detroit, was delivering construction materials to our Moorebank Logistics Precinct project in NSW when he suffered fatal injuries in a tragic accident.
As a result of this accident, Hansen Yuncken has entered an Enforceable Undertaking with SafeWork NSW. This Undertaking is a result of their investigation into our workplace practices and procedures, which identified areas for improvement across the business.
As part of the Undertaking, we have committed to implementing a range of initiatives over the next three years. At its core is our partnership with the University of Newcastle to establish the Centre for Construction Safety & Wellbeing, which will research the effectiveness of these initiatives in technology enabled learning, education and restorative justice.
The broader construction community will be invited to participate and contribute to research to benefit the industry – the progress and outputs of which will be made available on HYworkzone and SafeWork NSW websites.
We take safety very seriously and are committed to meeting our obligations and providing a safe and healthy workplace for everyone – our people, subcontractors, project partners and visitors. We will work closely with SafeWork NSW to ensure we meet the Undertaking requirements and continually improve our health and safety practices.
We understand this significant investment does not compare to the impact of serious workplace injuries, fatalities and families affected. We are entering this Undertaking with the support of Christopher’s family and will continue to work closely with them to create a lasting impact on the safety profession and broader construction community for generations to come.
I would like to thank you all for your continued commitment to health, safety and wellbeing at Hansen Yuncken. The business has responded proactively and has now been presented with an opportunity to bring the Many Minds framework to the broader industry through SafeWork NSW and the University of Newcastle.
If you have any questions about this Undertaking, please do not hesitate to speak with our National HSE&Q Manager Kurt Warren.
